                                                                  (Condensed)

                                                                 [Poet: Valmiki]

                                                              * SUNDARKANDA *

                                            व्रीडितां दुःखसंतप्तां  परिम्लानां तपस्विनीम।
                                            ग्रहेणांगारकेणेव पीडितामिव रोहिणीम।।

                        who was shrinking,anguished,fading and of emaciated body, depressed and pitiable like the Rohini star overpowered  by the planet Mars ;

                                            अश्रुपूर्णमुखीं  दीनां कृशामनशनेन च।
                                            शोकध्यानपरां दीनां नित्यं दुःखपरायणाम।।

                         who was miserable with a face full of tears emaciated on account of want of nourishment , always meditating on her own grief and being wholly absorbed in it .

                                            तस्य सन्दिदिहे  बुद्धिर्मुहुः सीतां निरीक्ष्य तु।
                                            आम्रायानामयोगेन विद्यां प्रशिथिलामिव।।

                         His mind still wavered  ,though  he repeatedly looked at her , who was like learning divorced fro practice .

                                            दुःखेन बुबुधे सीतां हनुमाननलंकृताम।
                                            संस्कारेण  यथा हीनां वाचमर्थान्तरं  गताम ।।

                          As she was without ornament , Hanuman  made her out with difficulty , like speech  without culture which has lost its own meaning .

                                           तां समीक्ष्य विशालाक्षीं राजपुत्रीमनिन्दिताम।
                                           तर्कयामास सीतेति  कारणैरुपपादिभिः।।

                        Looking at her possessed of wide eyes, the daughter of a king and of unimpeachable conduct ,he concluded her to be Sita by cogent reasonings :

                                           वैदेह्या यानि चांगेषु तदा रामोSन्वकीर्तयत।
                                           तान्याभरणजालानि शाखाशोभीन्यलक्षयत।।

                        "Those ornaments which Ram  had  described in the various parts of Sita`s  body ~~ he saw all those ornaments shining on the branches (of the Ashok tree ).

                                        तत्र यान्यवहीनानि  तान्यहं नोपलक्षये।

                          Those ornaments which were dropped ( at Rishyamuka ), them I do not see here.

                                      भूषणानि विचित्राणि दृष्टानि धरणीतले।
                                      अनयैवापविद्वानि  स्वनवन्ति महान्ति च।।

                        Those wonderful ,resonant and precious ornaments which were seen on the ground should certainly have been discarded by this lady.

                                  इदं चिरगृहीतत्वाद्वसनं क्लिष्टवत्तरम।
                                  तथाSपि नूनं तत्वर्णं  तथा श्रीमदयथेतरत।।

                      This garment has become tattered by long wear . Still it is surely of the same colour  and beauty as the other (which we picked up ).

                                 इयं कनकवर्णांगी रामस्य महिषी प्रिया।
                                 प्रनष्टाSपि सती याSस्य मनसो न प्रणश्यति।।

                      This golden-hued lady is (indeed) the beloved queen of Ram, for though she is lost , she is not lost from his mind .

                                 अस्या देव्या मनस्तस्मिंस्तस्य चास्यां प्रतिष्ठिम।
                                तेनेयं  स च धर्मात्मा मुहूर्तमपि जीवति।।

                      This lady`s mind is rooted in him and his mind is rooted in her . That is why , the righteous-minded  Ram and Sita  are maintaining their lives even for a while .

                               दुष्करं कृतवान रामो हीनो यदनया  प्रभुः।
                               धारयत्यात्मनो देहं न शोकेनावसीदति।।

                      Indeed , my master Ram performs a difficult feat in that ,being separated from her, he still maintains  his body and has not consumed himself with grief ."
