*KISHKINDHAKANDA*
(Poet: Valmiki)
अस्यां त्वहमवस्थायां वीर वक्ष्यामि यद्वचः।
यद्यप्यसुकरं राजन कर्तुमेव तदर्हसि।।
O heroic king ,however hard it may be , you ought to fulfil what I, reduced to this condition, am about to say .
सुखार्हं सुखसंवृद्धं बालमेनम बालिशम।
बाष्पपूर्णमुखं पश्य भूमौ पतितमंगदम।।
Behold Angada fallen on the ground , with his face full of tears, young but wise,brought up in luxury and and deserving of happiness.
मम प्राणैः प्रियतरं पुत्रं पुत्रमिवौरसम।
मया हीनमहीनार्थं सर्वतः परिपालय।।
From all harm protect him,my son dearer to me than life , as though he were your own son ,~~not laking any thing , though laking me .
राघवस्य च ते कार्य कर्तव्यमविशंकया।
स्यादधर्मो ह्यकरणे त्वां च हिंस्या द्विमानितः।।
You should unfalteringly carry out your duty towards Raghava .To fail him is to sin ; and being disregarded , he may punish you."
इत्युक्त्वाSथ विवृताक्षः शरसंपीडितो भृशम।
विवृतैर्दशनैर्भीमैर्बभूवोत्क्रान्तजीवितः।।
Having said thus , he died, agonised by the arrow , with his eyes opened wide and with his terrible teeth exposed.
ततो वालिनमुद्यम्य सुग्रीवः शिबिकां तदा।
आरोपयत विक्रोश अन्नंगदेन सहैव तु।।
Then Sugriva ,lamenting, raised the dead body of Vali along with Angada , and had it placed in the palanquin.
संस्कृत्य वालिनं ते तु विधिपूर्वं प्लवंगमा।
सुग्रीवतारासंहिताः सिपिचुर्वालिने जलम।।
Then the monkeys, along with Sugriva and Tara , after performing the funeral rites of Vali according to rule poured water-libations to Vali.
ततः काञ्चनशैलाभस्तरुणार्कनिभाननः।
अब्रवीत प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं हनुमान मारूतात्मजः।।
Then Hanuman , the son of the Wind-god , lustrous like a golden Mountain,his face effulgent like the rising sun, said with folded hands:
भवत्प्रसादात सुग्रीवः पितृपैतामहं महत।
वानराणां सुदुप्प्रापं प्राप्तो राज्यमिदं प्रभो।।
"O Lord (Rama) , through your grace , Sugriva has obtained this great hereditary kingdom of monkeys which is not attainable easily ."
एवमुक्तो हनुमता राघवः परवीरहा।
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं बुद्धिमान वाक्यकोविदः।।
Being thus addressed by Hanuman , the wise Raghava ,vanquisher of powerful enemies and well versed in speech , replied thus to Hanuman ;
सुसमृद्धां गुहां रम्यां सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः।
प्रविष्ठो विधिवद्वीरः क्षिप्रं राज्येSभिषिच्चताम।।
" Let the heroic Sugriva , the formost of moneys, enter this prosperous and pleasant cave and be installed quickly, according to rites , in the sovereignty ."
एवमुक्त्वा हनूमन्तं रामः सुग्रीवमब्रवीत।।
Having spoken to Hanuman thus Rama said to Sugriva:
इममप्यङ्गदं वीर यौवराज्येSभिषेचय।।
" O hero ,instal as Yuvraja this Angada .
ज्येष्ठस्य स सुतो ज्येष्ठः सदृशो विक्रमेण ते।
अङ्गदोSयमदीनात्मा यौवराज्यस्य भाजनम।।
He is the eldest son of your brother . He is equal to you in prowess. This Angada of heroic spirit is indeed worthy of being Yuvaraja.
प्रवृत्तास्सौम्य चत्वारो मासा वार्षिकसंज्ञकाः।
नायमुद्योगसमयः प्रविश त्वं पुरीं शुभाम्।।
O amiable one , the four months called the rainy season ,have begun. This is not a fit time for for our endeavours..(There fore) do you enter your auspicious city.
अस्मिन वत्स्याम्यहं सौम्य पर्वते सहलक्षमणः।
इयं गिरिगुहा रम्या विशाला युक्तमारुता।।
O amiable one , in this mountain , I shall live along with Lakshmana . This mountainous cave is pleasant, entensive and with suitable ventilation.
कार्तिके समनुप्राप्ते त्वं रावणवधे यत।
एष नस्समयस्सौम्य प्रविश त्वं स्वमालयम।।
As soon as the month of Kartika comes , bestir yourself towards the destruction of Ravana .O amiable one , this is our understanding. Do you enter your residence .
अभिषिक्ते तु सुग्रीवे प्रविष्टे वानरे गुहाम।
आजगाम सह भ्रात्रा रामः प्रस्रवणं गिरिम।।
After Sugriva had been installed and after he (monkey) had entered his cave , Rama Came along with his brother to the mountain Prasravana .
पाण्डुरं गगने दृष्ट्वा विमलं चन्द्रमण्डलम।
शारदीं रजनी चैव दृष्ट्वा ज्योत्स्नानुलेपनाम।।
अथ राजा समृद्धार्थः सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः।
उवाच नरशार्दूलं रामं परबलार्दनम।।
Seeing the sky white , the orb of the moon spotless and and the wintry night bathed in moonlight, the well satisfied king Sugriva , the lord of the monkeys ,said to Rama , the best of men and the destroyer of hostile hosts:
आगता वानरा घोरा दैत्यदानव सन्निभाः।
निदेशवर्तिनस्सर्वे सर्वे गुरुहिते रताः।।
" The monkeys are all come ,formidable, equal to Daityas and Danavas , obedient to our commands and devoted to the welfare of their master.
अभिप्रेतमनुष्ठातुं तव शक्ष्यन्त्यरिन्दम।
यन्मन्यसे नरव्याघ्र प्राप्तकालं तदुच्यताम।।
O vanquisher of foes ,they are capable of carrying out what you desire .O best of men , say what you consider appropriate to the season."
तथा ब्रुवाणं सुग्रीवं रामो दशरथात्मजः।
बाहुभ्यां संपरिष्वज्य इदं वचनमबृवीत।।
Rama, the son of Dasharatha , embraced with his hands Sugriva who spoke thus and then said these words:
ज्ञायतां मम वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा।
स च देशो महाप्राज्ञ यस्मिन वसति रावणः
" Let it be ascertained whethe my Sita (the daughter of Janaka, king of Videhas) lives or not . O wise one ; also the country where Ravana lives.
अधिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलये रावणस्य च।
प्राप्तकालं विधास्यामि तस्मिन् काले सह त्वया।।
After knowing about Sita and the abode of Ravana ,I shall then , together with you do what is suited to the time.
नाहमस्मिन प्रभुः कार्ये वानरेश न लक्ष्मणः।
त्वमस्य हेतुः कार्यस्य प्रभुश्च प्लवगेश्वर।।
O Lord of monkeys , in this matter I am not the master ,nor Lakshmana. O best of monkeys , of this undertaking you are the master as well as the cause.
त्वमेवाज्ञापय विभो मम कार्यविनिश्चयम।
त्वं हि जानासि यत्कार्यं मम वीर न संशयः।।
O Lord do you yourself order what ought to be done .For you know what should be done for me .O hero , there is no doubt in this."
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो विनतं नाम यूथपम।
अब्रवीद्रामसान्निध्ये लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः।।
When thus addressed , Sugriva spoke to a commander Vinata by name ,in the presence of Rama , and the wise Lakshmana:
अधिगम्य तु वैदेही निलयं रावणस्य च।
मासे पूर्णे निवर्तध्वं वसन वध्यो भवेन्मम।।
" Find out where Vaidehi (Sita) is and the abode of Ravana and return as soon as one month is completed . Whoever tarries (beyond a month )is liable to be killed by me.
